Amazon — Raised Up Sky uses frontier technologies to scan significant Amazonian trees and build a fully immersive, interactive digital artwork in VR that takes viewers deep into the scientific and spiritual currents of the rainforest.
I began the project during the pandemic with a virtual expedition, interviewing prominent figures in and around the Amazon to explore our physical, biological and cultural link to trees, while managing a remote team travelling into the rainforest to scan them and build a repository of point clouds.
Against the backdrop of the climate crisis, the enforced stillness of that year revealed the extent of the growing disharmony between humans and the natural world. This artwork is about awe, wonder, resolution and renewal — bringing the scale and magnificence of the trees to urban populations, and an intimate sense of the rainforest with them.
