Antarctica — behind the scenes

Behind-the-scenes photographs from the 2015 expedition to Antarctica.

I led a creative team that sailed from Ushuaia to the Antarctic Peninsula, where we photographically mapped icebergs that would later be projected onto buildings on the other side of the world. Four days across the Drake Passage each way, twenty days of working ice in between. We named the bergs after people we admired, and those names became the way we catalogued everything: the photographs, the sound recordings, the film.

These are the frames from around the work — the crossing, the crew, the gear, the moments between the pictures we went down there to make. Some of them I didn't look at properly for years.

The expedition has since become a book. I began dictating it into my phone on drives, and it is now at its ninth draft: ten chapters, each named for one of the icebergs, with the photographs running through it as plates. Many of the images on this page are in it. If everything lines up it goes to print in 2027, ten years after the projection first went up on the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
